Welcome to our new blog, which is going to be about our life here in Greece. We plan to include ideas about going green and self sufficiency as we move towards making these part of the reality of our daily life.
But mostly we’ll be writing about the day to day stuff: the things that interest, amuse and irritate us about life in Greece. We’ll be telling you about the people we’re meeting, the things we’re doing, in fact the whole range of experiences that come with settling into a new country.
Why the name? Well donkeys are still a fairly common feature of this area of the Peloponnese in that you can still see them being used to carry things, or people (usually it’s a little old Greek man riding on a donkey, with his little old wife trailing behind on foot), and so, inevitably, are their droppings. And as we’ve been looking to buy land we’ve seen our fair share of the latter over the last few months!
Donkey was one of the first words we learned in Greek, and we just like the sound of it (ya-i-dhu-ri for you non-Greek speakers), along with dho-dhe-ka (twelve). We still excitedly nudge one another, point and say ya-i-dhu-ri when we spot one, much like a two year old celebrating her first words. Twelve donkeys? – our idea of heaven.
And we had a vague idea that the domain name probably hadn’t been snapped up already.
We hope you’ll enjoy our musings over the coming months.
